Trueplay & Why it's important

Every room sounds different. With Trueplay, they can all sound great. Trueplay analyzes room size, layout, décor, speaker placement, and any other acoustic factors that can impact sound quality. Then it literally adjusts how each woofer and tweeter produces sound.

What is Trueplay?

The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay uses the microphone in your iOS device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and fine tunes your Sonos speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. Sonos speakers already sound fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

How do I access Trueplay?

At this time, Trueplay tuning may only be performed using an iOS device running the most current software version of the Sonos app. If you do not see the option to perform Trueplay after following the steps below, update to the latest version of software by tapping Settings > Online Updates. For more information on what devices and Sonos products support Trueplay, please refer to our article: Devices and players that are compatible with Trueplay.Using your iOS device:

1. Open the Sonos app. From the More tab, tap Settings > Room Settings. 2. Tap the room you wish to tune. If tuning has not yet been performed for a room, a red dot will appear next to the room name. 3.Tap "Trueplay Tuning" and follow the in-app instructions to complete tuning.

During the Trueplay tuning process, you will be prompted to grant Sonos permission to use the microphone on your iOS device. Trueplay tuning is the only time Sonos will use audio collected by your device’s microphone.

Tips for ensuring a good tuning

Minimize noise: Do your best to minimize noise during the tuning process. If possible, temporarily shut off any appliances (such as fans, air conditioners, washer/dryers) that are producing background noise. Refrain from talking during the tuning phase and be conscious of making loud noises while walking around the room. If your device has a protective case that covers the microphone, you may be instructed by the app to remove it before tuning. Cover as much area as possible: During the tuning process, do your best to cover as much of the room as possible. If you are tuning a speaker in a small room, use any remaining time after covering the room to focus on the areas where you listen to music the most.

Moving your device: During the in-app Trueplay instructions, be sure to watch the 45 second instructional video which demonstrates the technique for moving your device during the tuning phase. The video does not contain audio. Make smooth movements from head to waist with your device. Avoid moving your device too fast as this can cause a wind-like effect to be picked up by the microphone.

Do not adjust the volume: To ensure a quality calibration, the sound emitted by your speaker during tuning is fairly loud. Do not adjust the volume using the buttons on your speaker while the tuning sound is playing, as this will negatively impact your calibration. If you need to abort the tuning process, you can press the Play/Pause button on your speaker or tap the X that appears onscreen in the app during tuning.

Further Adjustments

Adjusting EQ after tuning After you tune your speaker, it is possible to adjust the EQ settings (treble/bass) if desired. These settings will be applied on top of the Trueplay setting, so you can enjoy your personal acoustic preferences along with all the advantages of using Trueplay as a starting point. The EQ can be adjusted for any room by going to the More tab and tapping Settings > Room Settings.

Toggling Trueplay off and on You can turn Trueplay off from any device running the Sonos app by going to Room Settings for the player that you tuned, and toggling it off or on.

When to retune your speaker Trueplay tuning is specific to how and where the speaker is placed within the room. We recommend retuning your speaker in the following scenarios:If you move the speaker to another location, even if it is in the same room.If you are calibrating a PLAY:3 or a PLAY:5 (gen2) and you change the orientation of the speaker (i.e., horizontal/vertical). Players will save one tuning profile for each possible orientation. If you change the configuration that a player is in it will need to be retuned. For example, if you tune a single PLAY:1, but then purchase a second PLAY:1 at a later time and decide to stereo pair the two speakers together, it will need to be retuned once the Stereo Pair has been configured.

How does Trueplay work?

Sound from a speaker reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room before it reaches your ear. These reflections can cause certain frequencies to sound either louder or quieter than they do in the studio mix. As the Trueplay calibration tone is played, the microphone in your device takes an “acoustic profile” of your room by recording how loud various frequencies sound as you move around. Trueplay then applies a combination of equalizer and filtering techniques to correct these frequencies so your music sounds the way the artist intended it to.
